Top 10 Stolen Items Sold Online

According to the National Retail Federation’s 2014 survey, the top stolen items of 2014 come from six different categories: grocery, health and beauty, over-the-counter medicine, clothing, home, and electronics. Anything that is able to be stolen and sold online, will be.

1. Infant Formula
Organized retail theft groups steal what they can sell in return. Infant formula can be relatively expensive, selling at $15 to $30 a can, which can be an easy turn-around profit for theft rings. Drug dealers also use the powdered infant formula to dilute heroin and methamphetamine or to stretch the product when supplies are running low.

2. Make-up products
Many make-up products are small and compact, which makes them easy to hide in coat pockets or sleeves. According to the Global Retail Theft Barometer Study of 2013-2014, the majority of people who steal make-up products simply forgot to pay for them.

3. Wines and spirits
Teenagers and alcoholics alike are the top shoplifters of high-end liquor. Jameson is the most common liquor stolen from stores.

4. Power tools
Drills, toothbrushes and other smaller power tools are commonly shoplifted from stores. Recently, electric toothbrushes that do not require toothpaste have been the most commonly shoplifted.

5. Mobile accessories
Smart phones, GPS devices, cameras, and video games are four of the most common gadgets stolen from retailers.

6. Razor blades
The most commonly shoplifted razor blade brand is Gillette non-disposable razor blades because they are fairly expensive.

7. Deodorant
Deodorant is usually small and easily slid into pockets and hidden. Axe and Dial are the two most common stolen brands.

8. Designer clothing
Brand names such as Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and Michael Kors are among the most commonly shoplifted brands of 2014.

9. Children’s electronic toys
Let’s Rock Elmo, among other popular toys, has been known to be commonly shoplifted from many Toys “R” Us stores.

10. Shoes
Athletic shoes are the most commonly shoplifted shoe. It is common for a shoplifter to wear sandals into the store, try on a pair of Adidas or Nike brand name athletic shoes, and walk out with the athletic shoes on.
