How to Find Stolen Goods on Craiglist

Craigslist has a lot to offer one of which being a place where you can buy and sell new/used goods for a decent price. Individuals turn to Craigslist when they’re wanting to purchase something inexpensive without the added fees of shipping and handling. However, many individuals who are looking to buy certain items don’t stop and think about what they’re about to order. Usually jumping on the first cheap thing they see.

Though with 80 million classified ads getting posted on Craigslist a month, it’s hard to differentiate what’s stolen.

One of the most commonly stolen items found on Craigslist is jewelry. It’s easy to identify stolen merchandise in this category because the descriptions of the items, similar to other postings, are vague and don’t have much about the product itself. Here is a diamond ring that is being sold on Craigslist. The seller leaves out a lot of information about the ring, i.e. cut, size, and other distinguishable traits. And the fact that the seller doesn’t know exactly what they’re selling, when they say that it’s maybe an engagement ring, shows that they have no “relation” to the product. When looking on the web for similar rings, they sell for about $50 or more. The picture quality isn’t all that great, either. When looking to buy items on Craigslist look at the pictures and their qualities. Most of the time with stolen items they seller normally takes pictures off of Google and doesn’t take any of their own. When they do take pictures, they only post one of the item they are trying to sell.

If you are at all suspicious about the product that you want to buy, contact the seller and ask specific questions. Asking as to where the item came from and their experience with it. If it’s an electronic item ask the seller for the serial number, normally when items are stolen the original owner reports the serial number of the item to the police. If given the serial number then call the manufacturer and ask if the item is stolen, if the item was reported the manufacturer should know. Also keep an eye out for other postings by the same seller, some individuals post to multiple cities to get the product better known.

Even though Craigslist has tried to crack down on preventing stolen items from being sold on their website, it’s still fairly common. With all the rules that they have there are people who find the loopholes to get around them. Keeping these things in thought when browsing any classified ads online will help to keep you safe from buying stolen items.
